Cantus vita est

Early November of 2019, I was on my way back from Central Regional NATS. Thrilled to have three students make finals, one of whom went on the take 1st in their division at Nationals, I was proud of myself and I was extremely proud of my students. Then, on the drive home, I had a stroke. The end.

Fortunately for me, it wasn’t the end. It was actually the beginning. A re-beginning! The next few years I’ve spent re-learning how to walk, speak, sing, play piano, and everything else I need to do to have my normal quality of life back. And I am here to tell you if I can do it, so can you! Singing is life, Cantus vita est!

Everyone can learn how to sing, statement of fact. Even better, they can learn to sing better than they currently do!

You may ask yourself, are singing lessons worth it? The answer is yes.

As a teacher, I take my role very seriously and it is honestly the best thing I do. I love being a teacher and seeing my students achieve every single week. As a teacher I promise to tell you the truth. I will tell you what is working well and what needs work. I am not here to feed your ego, only to improve your technique so you have a lifetime of music making. The core values in my teaching are expression, honesty, diligence, commitment, fearlessness, and, above all, love! These allow me to connect with students on a special level, which allows us both to grow, no matter what the starting point!

I believe that my students have a right to know that I know what I am talking about and that I have the experience to back it up. I hold a Master of Music in Voice Performance from Ithaca College, a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of Missouri - Kansas City, and a Bachelor of Music in Voice from Florida Southern College. I have been teaching voice and piano since 1989. In that time, I have worked with college and high school aged students, beginning adults, young children and retirees, gifted and special needs students, raw beginners and experienced professionals. I am currently the President of Kansas City area chapter of NATS and I participate in community theaters around the KC area as a music director.

Currently, my students have been very busy getting scholarships to Truman, Friends, and Pepperdine, landing leading roles in musical theatre productions, regularly placing in District and All State Chorus and All State Sight-singing Choir and taking home Golds from District and State contests.

But, winning leads and placing at contests is not what it is about, not for me at least. That’s not why we sing.

Singing is a true expression of joy, life, and light.

It is essential work. I’m honored to be a part of the process. Cantus Vita Est.
